Summer Phonics Practice for Kindergarten and First Grade

Summer break is a time for rest, outdoor fun, and family adventures—but a little reading practice can help young learners keep important literacy skills fresh.

The good news? Summer learning doesn’t need to feel like school. A short, simple phonics activity a few times a week can be enough to help children review what they already know and feel more confident when school starts again.

Keep Phonics Practice Short and Simple

For Kindergarten and beginning 1st Grade students, summer review can focus on foundational skills such as:

  • letter recognition
  • beginning sounds
  • short vowels
  • CVC words
  • syllables
  • simple word building
  • early reading practice

The goal isn’t to introduce lots of new material. Instead, summer practice works best when children revisit familiar skills in small, manageable chunks.

Try Different Types of Activities

Young learners often stay more interested when the activities change from day to day.

One day, students might match pictures to their beginning sounds. Another day, they can build a CVC word, count syllables, complete a read-and-color page, or practice missing vowels. The Kindergarten and 1st Grade Phonics Review packet includes these different activity types, along with tracing, word wheels, picture-supported reading, and cut-and-paste practice.

Create an Easy Summer Routine

You don’t need a complicated summer learning schedule. Try:

10–15 minutes, two or three times a week.

Choose one worksheet, read the directions together, and let your child work at their own pace. Pairing phonics practice with library visits, bedtime stories, or summer reading can make literacy part of the normal summer routine.

A Little Practice Goes a Long Way

Summer phonics review is less about completing a large stack of worksheets and more about keeping familiar skills active.

Simple activities with pictures, coloring, matching, reading, and word building can give young learners valuable practice while still leaving plenty of time for summer fun.
